Manatee County Landfill Stage II Phase II Gas Collection and Control System Kicks Off
The Stage II Phase II Gas Collection and Control System project kicks off. The ultimate goal of this project is to install a new landfill gas collection infrastructure that will benefit the environment. The project is currently in the preconstruction phase, with a small excavation to be completed for exploratory purposes.
Once completed, Phase II of the Stage II Landfill Gas Collection and Control System will provide gas to a renewable energy power plant using landfill gas from the Lena Road landfill to produce electricity for the Southeast Water Reclamation facility.
The renewable energy plant is an operational 1.6-Million Watt power generation facility. This will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year. It will also save the County an estimated $1M in energy costs annually.

Although the project faces challenges such as working around and under existing pipelines and maintaining the customer’s stormwater system, the CEC team has already used their knowledge to make a simple change in the design. Overall, improving the product for the customer and making the installation safer for field personnel.
This project’s absence of geosynthetics gives COMANCO more opportunities for field personnel to gain certification and hands-on experience with pipe fusion machines, including large-diameter pipes.
The project utilizes ISCO Industries Inc for HDPE pipe and fabricated items, Peavey & Associates for surveying, and QED Environmental Systems Inc for gas wellheads and condensate pumps.
