Florida Closure Project Progress Continues Despite Heavy Rain
COMANCO battles the Florida rain for closure project progress while remaining on schedule at a large Central Florida closure construction site. Despite difficult wet season conditions, COMANCO crews continue advancing grading, dewatering, and liner installation operations safely and efficiently across the multi-pond project area.
The Florida closure project involves extensive earthwork, pond preparation, dike construction, and geosynthetic liner installation designed to improve long-term environmental containment and site stability. Careful planning and proactive water management have allowed crews to continue making progress even during periods of intense rainfall.
South Pond Grading and Liner Installation
At the south pond, crews are completing the final grading activities on the remaining 10% of the 29-acre containment area. Approximately three-quarters of the pond has already been lined behind the earthmoving equipment, helping maintain production momentum while minimizing downtime between grading and geomembrane deployment.
This phased approach allows COMANCO to maximize efficiency by coordinating grading crews and liner installation teams simultaneously throughout the project.
Maintaining precise subgrade preparation remains critical for the long-term performance of the geosynthetic liner system. Proper grading and moisture management help prevent settlement issues, erosion concerns, and liner damage after installation.
Dewatering and Dike Construction Operations
As COMANCO battles the Florida rain for closure project completion, the north pond area is concurrently being prepared for additional grading operations. Crews continue constructing dikes and drainage channels that allow water to be safely redirected away from active work zones.
The middle dike separating the ponds is also progressing steadily with controlled compaction performed in lifts to ensure long-term structural integrity.
Because of the wet gypsum conditions onsite, high-capacity pumps are being used to manage stormwater and maintain workable construction conditions. Efficient dewatering operations help crews safely continue grading activities during and after rain events common throughout Central Florida’s wet season.
Safety and Environmental Protection Remain Priorities
Projects like this demonstrate the importance of experienced environmental construction crews and detailed water management planning. By continuously monitoring site conditions and adapting to changing weather, COMANCO remains committed to maintaining safe working environments while delivering high-quality environmental containment solutions.
COMANCO continues providing geosynthetic installation, closure construction, and environmental containment services for mining, wastewater, landfill, and industrial projects throughout the United States.
