COMANCO Installs First-of-Its-Kind Water Feature with Specialized Liner System
Not every liner installation is designed to stay hidden.
Most geosynthetic liner systems are designed to disappear from view once construction is complete. Performance remains the priority because the liner is typically covered by soil, water, or protective materials. Man-made beaches present a different challenge. In this application, the finished liner surface becomes part of the completed feature. Installation quality affects not only long-term performance but also the final appearance.
COMANCO is helping bring a first-of-its-kind beach-style water feature to life in Central Florida through specialized liner installation. As the project approaches 100% completion, crews have installed approximately 150,000 SF of 80 mil textured light blue LLDPE liner and completed more than 2,500 LF of extrusion tie-in welding.
More Than Just Containment
Most geosynthetic projects focus on containment performance, durability, and environmental protection. Those priorities remain critical on this project, but appearance introduces another layer of complexity.
Visible liner surfaces require greater attention during installation. Wrinkles, surface irregularities, and poor transitions can become noticeable once the project reaches completion. While these conditions may not always affect liner performance, they can impact the finished appearance of a recreational facility.
Achieving a smooth, uniform surface requires careful planning before installation begins. Material handling, panel layout, welding sequences, and field execution all influence the final result.
Environmental conditions can create additional challenges. Temperature fluctuations may affect liner expansion and contraction throughout the day. Wind conditions can also impact panel positioning and alignment during installation.
Success depends on maintaining quality standards while adapting to changing field conditions.
Familiar Principles, Different Application
Projects like this demonstrate how expertise in geosynthetic installation translates across industries and applications.
While the finished facility differs from a traditional containment system, many of the same installation principles still apply. Proper subgrade preparation, careful material deployment, consistent welding practices, and continuous quality control remain essential.
COMANCO crews rely on experience gained from landfill, mining, phosphate, and water management projects to address the challenges presented by specialty applications. Those lessons help crews make informed decisions when conditions change or unexpected situations arise.
This project also highlights the importance of field leadership. Maintaining consistency across a large, visible surface requires constant communication among installers, welders, and project supervisors.
Small adjustments made during installation can significantly improve the final product.
Expanding What’s Possible with Geosynthetics
This specialized liner application differs from many of the installations COMANCO crews encounter on a regular basis. The combination of a visible liner system, specialized embed connections, and a distinctive liner color requires precision from start to finish.
Foreman Martin Calderon Jr. and his crew continue to apply industry best practices while adapting installation methods to meet the project’s specific requirements.
The light blue textured liner supplied by AGRU adds another unique element to the project. Material color can influence both visual expectations and installation considerations, especially when the liner remains exposed as part of the finished feature.
Building Knowledge for Future Projects
Specialized projects often provide valuable opportunities for growth.
As construction progresses, COMANCO continues to evaluate installation methods, document lessons learned, and train additional crews on techniques that may benefit future projects.
Each unique application deepens COMANCO’s understanding of how geosynthetic systems perform across different environments. That knowledge strengthens future project execution and helps crews approach new challenges with greater confidence.
While containment performance remains the foundation of every installation, projects like this demonstrate the versatility of geosynthetic materials and the importance of experienced field execution.
Moving Forward
With the project nearing 100% completion, COMANCO crews continue liner installation and extrusion welding while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and service.
As work progresses, attention to detail remains critical. The finished liner system must meet both the functional and aesthetic expectations of a project where appearance matters as much as performance.
