COMANCO Completes 25,000 SF Wastewater Pond Liner Installation for North Florida WWTF

COMANCO has successfully completed a 25,000-square-foot wastewater pond liner installation for a Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) in North Florida. The project included the installation of a 60-mil Solmax back-textured geomembrane liner designed to provide long-term wastewater containment and support the town’s wastewater treatment infrastructure improvements. With the installation now complete, the facility has a durable, modern containment system built to support reliable waste stabilization and environmental protection for years to come.

With the installation now complete, the facility has a durable, modern containment system built to support reliable waste stabilization, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance for years to come. Covering nearly half the size of a football field, the new liner system represents a significant upgrade to the community’s wastewater treatment operations.

Project Overview

This wastewater pond liner installation is part of the town’s improvement and modification of an older wastewater treatment system. The new pond will serve as a waste stabilization and containment pond, a key component the facility needs to operate. COMANCO’s scope was the liner installation, and the project is now complete.

Properly designed and installed wastewater pond liners are critical components of municipal wastewater treatment systems. They help prevent seepage, protect surrounding groundwater resources, and support regulatory compliance while extending the service life of wastewater infrastructure.

Featured Installation: 60-Mil Solmax Back-Textured Geomembrane

The pond is lined using 60-mil Solmax back-textured geomembrane. This liner is designed for long-term containment in demanding wastewater applications. The textured surface adds friction and stability, which helps on sloped pond sidewalls.

HDPE geomembrane liners are commonly used in wastewater treatment ponds because of their chemical resistance, durability, and long-term performance characteristics. The 60-mil textured geomembrane selected for this project provides robust containment while improving stability on pond slopes and embankments.

COMANCO Experience: COMANCO has installed liner systems for municipal wastewater, mining, phosphate, and industrial containment projects across the country. That experience helps our crews handle the details of smaller municipal projects like this one with the same care as our largest installations.

Scope of Work and Materials

COMANCO installed approximately 25,000 square feet of geomembrane liner to create a durable wastewater containment system capable of supporting long-term facility operations.

The installation included:

  • 60-mil Solmax back-textured geomembrane
  • Batten bar attachments at two pipe boots
  • Batten bar attachment at the pond weir
  • Penetration detailing and sealing around submerged structures
  • Anchor trench installation and liner termination

These critical connection points help ensure a watertight transition between the liner system and structural components of the wastewater pond.

A Marine-Grade Solution for Submerged Connections

Because the pipe boots and weir will sit underwater, durability at these connections was a priority. COMANCO used a marine-grade Sikaflex sealant for the batten bar installations to add long-term durability where the liner will be continuously submerged. Details like this help keep penetrations and structures watertight and performing as designed.

Overcoming Complex Challenges

As with many wastewater infrastructure projects, field conditions required adaptability and problem-solving.

The installation team encountered challenges related to existing site features located near the pond perimeter. To maintain proper liner placement and avoid interference with surrounding obstacles, COMANCO adjusted the anchor trench location while preserving the integrity of the design.

The crew also experienced an unexpected equipment issue when the anchor trench compactor became inoperable. Rather than allowing production delays, the team coordinated with the site and quickly secured a replacement compactor, keeping the project on schedule.

Commitment to Safety and Quality

Quality assurance and quality control are central to every COMANCO liner installation.

This project showed the depth of our team. When the on-site QA/QC technician was unable to continue, Hector Yanes stepped in to complete the on-site QA/QC. His response kept the project on track without compromising quality standards. Every COMANCO project is built on our commitment to safety and quality, from daily hazard awareness to thorough inspection and testing.

Crew Recognition

Superintendent Carlos Garcia and his crew demonstrated strong problem-solving when the anchor trench compactor went down. Rather than losing production time, they coordinated with the site and brought in another compactor so the work could keep moving. Hector Yanes also deserves recognition for stepping into the QA/QC role when it was needed. Their adaptability and teamwork helped bring the project to a successful completion.
