The term ‘tailgate meeting’ comes from the practice of meeting around the tailgate of a pickup truck on site. A more generic and perhaps more popular term for this is a ‘toolbox meeting’. While you could argue there are different manners to name this on-site meeting, the main point is that the crew meets before work begins to take a close look at the hazards, processes, equipment, tools, environment and materials. This ensures all workers are informed of the risks and the controls in their work area and surroundings.
