COMANCO has just completed lining the second of two caps at a Superfund Remedial site in Picayune, Mississippi, with the first cap having been lined in August of last year. The Site is a former wood treatment plant which started production in the early 1900s, and pressure treatment of pine wood using creosote began in the 1940s. In the early 1980s, the groundwater underneath the site was found to contain contaminates such as creosote and asbestos waste from the wood-treating operations. The plant ceased operations in 1999, and the EPA has since included it on its list of Superfund Sites. The COMANCO team, led by Project Superintendent Jorge Barrantes, Project Manager David Barnett, and Project Engineer Nick Bridges, capped a 3-acre area of contaminated soil with HDPE geomembrane, GCL, and geocomposite strips in August of 2012. Over the past two weeks, the crew headed back to Mississippi to install the same materials over a 10-acre containment area. COMANCO worked as a subcontractor to KEMRON Environmental Services and battled weather and the elements to complete the job on schedule, under-budget, and without any lost-time incidents.
