COMANCO Making Headway on 14-Acre Landfill and Protecting Florida’s Groundwater

COMANCO’s latest progress update on our 14-acre landfill project in Central Florida. This complex and environmentally critical initiative, which involves earthwork, lining, and piping, is progressing with precision and expertise. Here’s a detailed look at our advancements and the benefits this project will bring to the community.

Building a Strong Foundation

Completing the earthwork phase marks a significant milestone in ensuring a stable and secure base for the liner system – a crucial component in modern landfill construction. Currently, the team is halfway through installing the Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) and secondary liner. These materials are integral to preventing contamination and safeguarding the environment. As of yesterday, Superintendent Martin Calderon and his crew have installed 200,000 SF of GCL and liner material combined, reflecting their skill and commitment to quality.

This project entails precisely deploying over 5.4 million square feet of geosynthetics to meet stringent environmental and regulatory standards. The materials include:

  • 843,975 SF of GCL
  • 1,704,000 SF of 60mil Textured Liner (provided by Skaps)
  • 1,753,050 SF of Geocomposite
  • 333,000 SF of Geotextile
  • 837,000 SF of Rain Tarp

By employing high-quality materials and industry-leading techniques, COMANCO ensures the landfill meets and exceeds performance expectations.

Teamwork Driving Success

The exceptional problem-solving demonstrated by Superintendent Calderon and his crew is a cornerstone of this project’s success. Change orders, common in large-scale construction, have been addressed efficiently thanks to their collaborative approach and ingenuity. Their ability to adapt to evolving circumstances underscores the expertise and reliability that COMANCO brings to every project.

Regional Impact

Cells 5A and 5B are uniquely designed to handle up to 100,000 tons of Class 1 waste annually. This focused scope highlights the project’s importance in addressing local waste management challenges while supporting the region’s growth. By expanding waste storage capacity, this project ensures sustainable waste management for years to come.

Enhancing Environmental Protection and Community Well-Being

Beyond its technical achievements, this landfill project represents a significant investment in environmental safety and community health. By securely containing waste and protecting groundwater resources, it plays a vital role in maintaining clean, safe water for residents. This initiative reflects COMANCO’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that benefits both the environment and the people who depend on it.
