Committees from SCS, CDM Smith, and Hallaton joined COMANCO team members in returning to their first in-person conference at the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, FL.
The three-day conference was an opportunity for COMANCO founders, engineers, and team members to reconnect with friends and associates from across the industry, some they hadn’t seen in some time.
THE SHOWROOM
The exhibit floor at Naples Grand was home to 30 different exhibitors across on-site management, equipment suppliers, installers, and industrial freight and fulfillment.
This smaller number of exhibitors allows SWANA FL to have a more personable exhibit hall than some of the industry’s large annual conferences. The 30-exhibit showroom facilitates more relaxed interaction throughout the event.
For Evan Bao, QA/QC Engineer, the summit presented an opportunity to meet with Todd Harman and other IAGI members with whom he regularly discusses on-the-job quality assurance and industry best practices.
“It’s early days for having an across-the-board standard for the Geosynthetics industry,” Evan Bao said. “Harmon, myself, and other IAGI members are hopeful we can implement meaningful and effective standards to propel us forward.”
For Evan, COMANCO Safety/QC Manager Greg Pignataro and others like Harmon and Mark, such high standards are core to advancement in Geosynthetics.
THE QA/QC Panel
With the showroom acting as a good hub of activity throughout the day during exhibitor hours, the room hosting presentations throughout the week was often full.
QC Engineer Evan Bao and Safety/QC Manager Greg Pignataro appeared before an assembly of over 100 participating businesses from the FL area to speak about the advantages of our GPS as-built system, GeoCAAB.
“We had a lot of questions after we wrapped,” Evan admits. “There was kind of an issue of time because we had 30 minutes to present”.
“There is a lot to GeoCAAB but we got it across, which felt good,” Greg added.
The two engineers enjoyed Dave Robau’s presentation on robotics for National Energy USA just before their own. They were impressed.
“They’re solving a problem of sorting in the recycling industry,” Greg said. “You deal with bags that often carry delicate or unsafe materials for someone to handle just with their hands. Here’s a robot capable of recognizing and distinguishing different kinds of plastic, paper, and glass. It’s able to handle and separate it.”
Ultimately, Greg, Evan, and COMANCO are excited for what the coming years hold for the industry and geosynthetics.
