First of Its Kind Closure Completed at New River Landfill

COMANCO recently completed a First of Its Kind Closure at New River Landfill, marking a major milestone for landfill closure systems in the State of Florida. Led by Superintendent Forrest Detzel, the COMANCO crew successfully installed what is expected to become the first permitted Exposed Geomembrane Cover (EGC) final closure system of its kind in Florida.

This First of Its Kind Closure showcases COMANCO’s continued leadership in innovative geosynthetic installation and environmental containment solutions. The project was designed to provide long-term durability while reducing the ongoing maintenance requirements commonly associated with traditional landfill closure systems.

Innovative Exposed Geomembrane Cover System

Unlike conventional closure systems that often rely on soil cover and vegetation, this exposed geomembrane closure system utilizes a durable engineered liner system specifically designed to withstand environmental exposure for years to come. The system minimizes maintenance needs while improving long-term performance and stability.

A unique feature of this First of Its Kind Closure was the custom ballast trench system. The ballast trenches were completely fusion welded using a double wedge weld technique to strengthen protection against wind uplift and weather exposure. This advanced welding process helps ensure the integrity of the closure system while improving overall containment performance.

Large-Scale Landfill Closure Installation

The COMANCO crew installed more than 729,000 square feet of Exposed Geomembrane Cover throughout the project. Additional work included:

• Installation of more than 2,000 LF of toe-drain systems
• Excavation and backfilling of 9,300 LF of ballast trenches
• Double wedge welding of 9,000 LF of 60mil geomembrane
• Installation of more than 91,000 SF of 60mil geomembrane across four stormwater ponds connected to the closure system

The scale and complexity of this project required careful planning, precision installation, and strong coordination between crews to maintain safety and quality standards throughout construction.
