COMANCO Attends 2024 FLSME Scholarship BBQ Supporting STEM Education
COMANCO attends the 2024 FLSME Scholarship BBQ to support STEM education, mining industry awareness, and student scholarship opportunities throughout Central Florida. The annual fundraiser, hosted by the Florida Section for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (FLSME), plays an important role in investing in future generations of students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Representing COMANCO at this year’s event were Shujwana Lamy and Superintendent Gerardo Ruiz, who joined fellow industry professionals, educators, and community members in supporting the scholarship program and educational initiatives.
FLSME Scholarship BBQ Supports Future STEM Leaders
The FLSME Scholarship BBQ serves as one of the organization’s largest annual fundraising events. Funds raised during the event directly support scholarship opportunities for deserving high school seniors in DeSoto, Polk, and Hardee counties, as well as educational activities through the University of Florida SME Student Chapter.
In addition to scholarships, the Student Relations Program also provides mini-grants for teachers developing mining-focused curriculum and supports regional science fairs by supplying materials and volunteer judges.
By supporting educational initiatives like these, the mining industry helps encourage student interest in STEM careers while strengthening the future workforce needed across engineering, environmental, and industrial sectors.
