COMANCO Lines Stormwater Detention System at Freedom Park Stadium Ahead of Opening Day
As excitement builds for the April 4 opening of Freedom Park Stadium, COMANCO is proud to play a behind-the-scenes role in supporting the long-term performance of this high-profile venue. With global attention on the stadium, including Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF calling it home, infrastructure reliability is more critical than ever.
Solving a Modern Stormwater Challenge
Urban developments and large venues often lack the space for traditional retention ponds. Stadiums, parking lots, and plazas leave little room for above-ground storage, yet stormwater management remains a critical requirement. That’s where modular detention systems like ACO StormBrixx® make a difference. These stackable, high-capacity systems allow stormwater to be safely stored underground, even under parking areas, while reducing excavation, backfill, and maintenance needs.
For this project, COMANCO installed over 126,000 SF of 30 mil HDPE liner (Solmax) for the StormBrixx system, creating a reliable, durable, and long-lasting solution that meets both operational needs and regulatory compliance requirements.
Scope of Work
Installing the HDPE liner on a Storm Brixx detention system required multiple mobilizations and precise sequencing. The liner installation was completed in phases:
- Liner installation on the bottom of the Storm Brixx system
- Placement of Storm Brixx boxes by Downrite Engineering
- Liner installation on the top of the system
- Secure attachment of both top and bottom liner components
This process demanded careful coordination with project partners and strict adherence to quality and safety standards to ensure system performance.
Working Safely in a Congested Stadium Environment
One of the most notable aspects of this project was the highly congested jobsite, a common feature of stadium construction. The COMANCO crew demonstrated strong situational awareness, understanding the importance of maintaining safe work zones and adjusting operations to protect surrounding trades and infrastructure.
Additionally, this project was led by Superintendents Alejandro Loza and Juan Ayala Valencia. Their leadership ensured seamless execution across mobilizations while maintaining focus on safety, quality control, and schedule.
Precision Planning and Execution
Stormwater detention projects require more than installation experience. They demand detailed planning, coordination, and a high level of technical skill. The liner system had to be installed with accuracy to ensure long-term containment, durability, and compatibility with the Storm Brixx system.
COMANCO’s ability to execute this work safely while maintaining quality standards reinforces its reputation as a trusted partner for complex civil and environmental projects.
Long-Term Impact
Once complete, the stormwater detention system will:
- Control runoff from the stadium
- Reduce erosion risks
- Lower long-term maintenance costs
- Support sustainable site performance
These benefits are especially important for facilities hosting frequent events, large crowds, and national attention.
Developing Stormwater Solutions with Modular Detention Systems
Stormwater detention systems like Storm Brixx represent a growing market, particularly in urban developments, stadiums, and large commercial sites. Many modular detention systems rely on liner-integrated designs, creating opportunities for collaboration between manufacturers and experienced liner installation contractors.
COMANCO’s involvement in projects like Freedom Park Stadium positions the company to support this evolving market through proven liner installation expertise, coordination with system providers, and reliable field execution.
About ACO StormBrixx and Stormwater Detention
The ACO StormBrixx® system is a patented plastic geocellular stormwater management system designed for surface water detention, retention, infiltration, and reuse in a wide range of construction environments. Its modular, stackable design enables efficient delivery, simplified logistics, and flexible configurations tailored to site-specific requirements, making it well-suited for large stormwater detention tanks and sustainable drainage systems. With a high void ratio and robust structural features, StormBrixx systems provide significant storage capacity while reducing excavation and backfill needs and allowing access for inspection and maintenance.
