Methane Gas Mitigation System Supports Brownfield Redevelopment in Miami
Redeveloping former landfill properties requires specialized environmental construction solutions to safely manage subsurface gases. COMANCO recently completed a methane gas mitigation system installation beneath a future warehouse development in Miami, Florida, helping transform a former brownfield site into safe and productive commercial property.
This methane gas mitigation system was designed to safely vent methane gas away from the building footprint while supporting long-term environmental compliance and redevelopment goals.
Brownfield Redevelopment and Methane Gas Mitigation System Design
The methane gas mitigation system was engineered by SCS Engineers and installed beneath the warehouse structure to safely redirect methane gas generated from former landfill materials. This passive venting system helps prevent methane accumulation beneath the slab and creates a safer environment for future occupants and operations.
COMANCO continues to lead the environmental construction industry by supporting brownfield redevelopment projects with advanced geosynthetic and gas mitigation solutions.
Methane Gas Mitigation System Materials and Installation
The methane gas mitigation system installation included several specialized components designed to work together for long-term performance and reliability.
HDPE Liner and GeoVent Installation
Key materials installed during the project included:
- 227,322 square feet of 60 mil smooth HDPE liner supplied by SKAPS
- GeoVent gas venting material supplied by CETCO
- Over 1,000 linear feet of 6-inch header pipe
- Approximately 460 feet of 4-inch outlet piping
- Nearly 100 feet of 6-inch vent riser piping
- Schedule 80 PVC piping supplied by Harrington Industrial Plastics
The complete methane gas mitigation system safely vents methane gas away from the future warehouse structure while supporting environmental protection and regulatory compliance.
Leadership, Training, and Quality Control
The project was managed by Superintendent Tommy Terry with field leadership provided by Leadman Martin Calderon. Project Manager Gustavo Cardona coordinated specialized training focused on proper cutting, preparation, and solvent welding procedures for Schedule 80 PVC piping.
The training and preparation helped the crew achieve successful pressure testing on the first attempt, reinforcing COMANCO’s commitment to quality workmanship and first-time accuracy.
Supporting Long-Term Brownfield Redevelopment
COMANCO has supported brownfield redevelopment efforts across South Florida for more than a decade by installing methane gas mitigation systems beneath warehouse and commercial developments. These systems help transform previously unusable landfill property into safe, productive commercial space.
