COMANCO Starting Strong on Landfill Expansion Project in Palm Beach, FL
COMANCO is breaking ground on a major landfill expansion project in Palm Beach County, Florida. This effort involves the construction of a Class I Landfill Expansion and Temporary Closure. Under the leadership of Superintendent Billy Wilson and Leadman Dulis Loaiza, the complete project will consist of earthwork, liner installation, and piping.
Preparation and Excavation
The crew is actively working on earthwork, focusing on excavating the cell and surrounding areas. This preparation phase is essential for the upcoming liner and pipe installation. Careful attention is being given to ensure the subgrade is ready for the placement of materials that will provide a secure containment system.
Building Blocks of the Expansion
This expansion effort includes the installation of a wide range of geosynthetic and protective products. Agru is supplying more than two million square feet of liner and geocomposite materials. These supplies include 450,800 SF of 30 mil HDPE liner and over 1.5 million SF of 60 mil HDPE liner. Additional materials supplied by Agru consist of 1.25 million SF of geocomposite for the cell, 326,250 SF of overlay geocomposite, 590,295 SF of geonet, and 171,000 SF of geotextile. Furthermore, CETCO is providing 615,525 SF of GCL, while Conrad Yelvington is hauling in over 3,000 tons of river gravel. SB Britt Trucking will be delivering protective cover sand for the project, which requires 115,335 tons.
Coordinating Work and Safety
An on-site mobile COMANCO office provides space for ongoing collaboration, allowing Superintendent Billy Wilson to conduct meetings with the client and crew. Project Engineer Alex Kusik is on-site full-time to assist with daily operations. This setup ensures strong communication and effective project coordination. Positive feedback has been noted regarding the operators who are consistently following heavy equipment safety protocols.
Innovative Aspects
Among its unique aspects, the landfill expansion features a temporary overlay closure liner installation. This system connects directly to the cell expansion and requires specialized work. Responsibilities include the abandonment of existing gas wells and the installation of a new gas pipe system. This complexity adds another layer of importance to the work being completed by COMANCO
