COMANCO Installing Over 13.39 Million SQ FT of Geosynthetics Across Gypstack Development

COMANCO continues to make substantial progress across five active projects contributing to a large-scale gypsum stack development at a major facility in Central Florida. Each project phase serves a unique purpose, with all five working in sync to support long-term environmental responsibility and future development.

Coordinated Execution and Team Deployment

The scope of these projects includes liner installation for a future gypsum stack as well as an early stack closure. Additionally, slope liner is being installed on both the west and east sides of the future stack. At the same time, the team is working on a surge pond installation that includes a stormwater reroute ditch.

COMANCO currently has four full crews working simultaneously across these projects. A dedicated leadership team is managing each project. Their collaborative efforts are key to staying on track and ensuring that each milestone supports the next.

Liner Installation for Future Stack

The bottom liner installation focused on preparing two areas for future gypsum stack development. Crews are putting the finishing touches on this phase, with final work underway to bring it to completion. The work was supported by ongoing efforts from earthwork contractors and various COMANCO personnel, ensuring that each area was ready for liner deployment on schedule.

Early Stack Closure

Installation on the early stack closure is in its final stretch, scheduled to wrap up at the end of August. Crews are installing a total of 5.3 million SQ FT of liner and 2.5 million SQ FT of geocomposite. This phase, led by Superintendent Ramon Irizarry, Leadman Laudencio Luna, and Lead QC Cesar Quirino, represents a significant milestone in the site’s environmental protection strategy.

West Slope

The slope liner installation on the west side of the future stack is progressing steadily under the leadership of Superintendent Martin Calderon and Leadman Esteban Solano. Crews have completed the upper slope and are preparing to shift focus to the top and lower slopes. So far, 489,821 SQ FT of liner and 118,853 SQ FT of geocomposite have been installed, with more progress anticipated in the coming weeks.

East Slope

The slope liner installation on the east side of the future stack was completed in the final week of July. Crews installed a total of 655,000 SQ FT of liner and 260,000 SQ FT of geocomposite. This work, led by Foreman Juan Morales, marked a key achievement in preparing the site for future containment needs.

Surge Pond

The fifth active project involves the installation of nearly 1 million SQ FT of liner in a surge pond with a stormwater reroute ditch. In addition to liner deployment, crews are also installing pipe boots, pipe vents, and anchor trenches to support system functionality. This work, led by Foreman Ubaldo Mancilla, adds another critical layer of environmental protection to the overall site strategy.

Material Selection and Progress

To ensure optimal containment, COMANCO is using 60mil HD textured liner and Geocomposite 10-250-10 from AGRU, Geocomposite 330-2-10 from Skaps, and Geocomposite Fabrinet 275mil from Solmax. Material installation is well underway. Across all five projects, crews have installed over 6.6 million SQ FT of liner and more than 3 million SQ FT of geocomposite.

Impact and Execution

This work supports preparation for future expansion while actively improving environmental outcomes today. The simultaneous deployment of four dedicated crews highlights COMANCO’s capacity to manage large, multi-phase jobs with precision and teamwork.

Environmental Benefits and Long-Term Outcomes

These efforts are delivering measurable environmental benefits. To safeguard surrounding areas, the stack closure system channels clean rainwater away from potential contamination. The bottom liner and both slope installations are focused on containing gypsum to maintain environmental integrity. With each crew playing a vital role, COMANCO remains committed to delivering safe, efficient, and environmentally conscious containment solutions.
