As COMANCO Environmental nears completion of a coal ash landfill closure in Palatka, Florida, sod installation has begun as one of the final phases of construction. The sod acts as a key component for erosion control to maintain the closure system’s functionality. Previously, the site had to be cleared & grubbed, stripped, balanced out with cut / fill operations and fine graded to reach a liner design subgrade elevation. A geosynthetic system –60-mil HDPE geomembrane & double-sided geocomposite – was then installed. Two foot of protective cover – 18” clean soil topped with 6” of topsoil material – was then placed over the liner system prior to sod going down. This past week nearly 275,000 SF of sod was installed.
Superintendent, Nathan Wilfong, and Foreman, Pedro Beltran, continue doing a great job keeping the crews on task and on schedule while maintaining COMANCO’s valued safety culture.
