COMANCO Is Celebrating Black History Month.
In honor of celebrating Black History Month, COMANCO wants to recognize just a few individuals who have contributed to the construction, engineering, and environmental industries in the past and into the present.
- George Washington Carver: Carver was a leader in educating farmers about crop rotation and yield. His master’s thesis states that “man must take the initiative in using nature to provide sustainable food systems that will help to alleviate hunger, encourage local participation and activism, and to safeguard and control our local food and water systems.”
- Jesse Jackson: Jackson fought to end discrimination in the construction trades. He led the movement in Chicago, stating, “if they were going to build where we live, we should have the trade skills to build.”
- Lilia A. Abron: Abron was the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Her research focused on the environmental movement. She is also the first African American to found an environmental engineering firm, PEER CP, specializing in sustainable solutions. She also serves on the Advisory Board for the College of Engineering, University of South Florida.
- Walt Braithwaite: Braithwaite and his team at Boeing developed CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing systems). This has allowed designers to move from pen and paper drafting to software.
- Wangari Mathai: Mathai is the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Since starting The Green Belt Movement, over 51 million trees have been planted, improving local environments and the lives of the people in it.
- Robert Bullard: Known as the father of environmental justice, Bullard’s work led to the signing of the Executive Order on Environmental Justice in 1994.
