COMANCO Elevates Geomembrane Quality Control with Real-Time Weld Documentation
At COMANCO, quality control extends far beyond testing completed work—it’s an integral part of every stage of installation. A geomembrane project in North Florida demonstrates how innovative technology, skilled technicians, and precise documentation come together to deliver exceptional results.
The project includes the installation of more than 365,500 square feet of white 60-mil textured HDPE geomembrane as part of a landfill closure. This is more than six football fields laid side by side. While the installation itself is significant, the project’s greatest achievement is the level of quality assurance built into one of its most unique features: the ballast trench system.
A Unique Welding Challenge
Unlike traditional geomembrane installations that rely on cover soil and sod, this project incorporates an innovative ballast trench system designed to secure the liner while eliminating the need for those materials.
Installing the ballast trenches requires a special fusion welding machine, allowing COMANCO’s field crew to complete welds in areas that demand exceptional precision. Under the leadership of Superintendent Jorge Gomez, the team successfully installed and welded 4,622 linear feet of ballast trenches, a distance equivalent to nearly nine-tenths of a mile or about 10 times the height of the Washington Monument, while maintaining the high standards required for long-term performance.
Every Weld Accounted For
Behind every successful weld is a rigorous quality control process, and this one was led by QC Technician Hector Yanes.
Using GeoCAAB, a quality management software, Hector documented every ballast trench weld as it was completed. Rather than relying solely on paper records or post-construction reporting, GeoCAAB provides real-time documentation and verification throughout the installation process.
This digital workflow gives project stakeholders immediate visibility into welding progress while creating a comprehensive record of each weld’s location and quality. The result is greater traceability, improved communication, and increased confidence that every weld meets project specifications.
