COMANCO Environmental is in the final stages of completing a 10-acre temporary cover project at a landfill just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. A smooth 40-mil HDPE geomembrane has been installed over a prepared sub-grade.
Following behind and being placed over top of the geomembrane is a new Wind Defender product. Wind Defender is a reinforced geotextile windscreen made of knitted, green, UV stabilized HDPE filament that is now being used as a new, cost-effective ballast system for exposed geomembrane covers. Engineers are starting to look at Wind Defender as an alternate to other ballasting systems such as sand bags, tires, etc. as these can be costly and unreliable in the long term.
For this project, the 40-mil HDPE geomembrane cover is being used to enhance the landfill’s gas collection system with Wind Defender acting as a preventive measure against cross winds and wind uplift to the 40-mil HDPE cover.
