COMANCO Constructs Surface Impoundments for Shale-Gas Drilling Operations

by

Environmental concerns and increasing regulation

As oil and gas extraction from unconventional sources expands to supply a larger portion of our energy market, increasing environmental regulation of the industry is following close behind. Concerns are being raised over the drilling process called hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) and the storage and disposal of the wastewater it produces. The EPA is currently conducting a study on the effect of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources, including the management of the flowback of contaminated water out of the wells. See the EPA website for more information. State and local regulatory agencies are also taking new action in response to the industry’s rapid growth.
