Transforming Brownfields: COMANCO Installs Methane Gas Mitigation System for Miami Warehouse

Redeveloping Brownfield Sites Safely

Redeveloping brownfield sites requires specialized engineering to safely manage subsurface gases. One of the most effective solutions is a methane gas mitigation system, which prevents methane generated from former landfill materials from accumulating beneath new structures.

To support the redevelopment of a former landfill site in Miami, COMANCO installed a Methane Gas Management System (MGMS) beneath a future warehouse facility. The system safely vents methane gas away from the building footprint, helping transform previously unusable land into safe, productive commercial space.

Methane Gas Mitigation System Installation

The MGMS was designed by SCS Engineers and installed to safely redirect methane gas from the former landfill site away from future structures. This passive venting system ensures a safe environment for future tenants while allowing the land to be reused for commercial purposes.

Materials and Installation Overview

Key components of the installation included:

  • 227,322 square feet of 60 mil smooth HDPE liner supplied by SKAPS
  • GeoVent gas venting material supplied by CETCO
  • Extensive PVC piping network:
    • Over 1,000 linear feet of 6-inch header pipe
    • Approximately 460 feet of 4-inch outlet piping
    • Nearly 100 feet of 6-inch vent riser pipes
    • (Supplied by Harrington Industrial Plastics)

The system works together to safely vent methane gas away from the building footprint and outside the structure.

Leadership, Crew Training, and Quality Installation

The project was managed by Superintendent Tommy Terry, with field leadership by Leadman Martin Calderon Jr. To ensure a leak-free installation, Project Manager Gustavo Cardona coordinated specialized training on proper cutting, preparation, and solvent welding of Schedule 80 PVC piping.

This training ensured the piping system passed pressure testing on the first attempt, demonstrating COMANCO’s commitment to first-time quality and minimizing potential rework.

Transforming Land for Future Development

COMANCO has been supporting this brownfield redevelopment for over a decade, installing methane mitigation systems beneath numerous warehouse structures. Each installation transforms previously unusable landfill land into safe, productive commercial space.

Projects like this highlight how COMANCO’s expertise in geosynthetics, methane mitigation, and environmental construction allows developers to repurpose contaminated sites while ensuring safety and compliance.
