Coal Ash Landfill Closure Supports Renewable Energy Facility
COMANCO has successfully completed Phase 1 of a coal ash landfill closure project for a renewable energy facility in Central Florida. This large-scale environmental containment effort is designed to improve long-term site sustainability while protecting surrounding groundwater and soil from potential contamination.
The coal ash landfill closure project has been strategically divided into four stages to allow for controlled construction and minimize environmental exposure during installation. Each phase includes earthwork, geosynthetic liner installation, and pipe system integration to ensure proper containment and stormwater management.
Coal Ash Landfill Closure Includes Advanced Liner Systems
During Phase 1, COMANCO crews prepared the liner subgrade and constructed haul routes throughout the landfill to improve accessibility and support ongoing operations. The team also installed approximately five acres of geosynthetic liner across the first slope section.
Following liner installation, crews began installing a pipe system designed to manage rainwater flow across the landfill slopes. Once completed, an additional protective soil layer will be placed over the system to help preserve long-term performance and durability.
The completed coal ash landfill closure will utilize more than 1.3 million square feet of Atarfil 60-mil Textured HDPE liner along with more than 1.3 million square feet of Skaps TN330-2-8 Double-Sided Geocomposite.
Together, these materials create a reinforced, impermeable barrier system that safely isolates coal ash materials from the surrounding environment.
Environmental Protection Through Sustainable Construction
The overall project spans approximately 31 acres and includes both slope closures and the top deck of the landfill system. By preventing water infiltration and containing coal combustion residuals, the coal ash landfill closure helps maintain environmental compliance while supporting ongoing facility operations.
This project plays an important role in protecting local ecosystems, groundwater resources, and nearby communities while allowing the renewable energy facility to continue producing much-needed power.
