Employees used their “Right to Stop Work” as soon as they discovered the conditions had changed in their work area and it presented a potential hazard to them. Our Superintendent stopped work after being notified by the crew; with the cooperation of the Project Manager which was discussed with the client, the inspector, engineering and civil contractor the potential hazard. Immediately, after a solution was agreed upon, the civil contractor proceeded to correct the potentially hazardous condition.
This is a perfect example of having a good safety mindset. If you see a hazard or a potential hazard in the work area or in the task at hand, inform your supervisor immediately.
Let’s remember, everybody has the “Right to Stop Work” when an unsafe condition or act could result in an undesirable event. In general terms, the process is stop, notify, correct and resume with revised conditions.
