COMANCO Finalizes Large-Scale Liner Installation at Louisiana Phosphate Facility

Containment work rarely follows a straight path from start to finish. Conditions change daily. Work areas shift. Multiple contractors operate in the same space at the same time. Crews have to adapt quickly while still maintaining quality and safety standards across every phase of construction.

COMANCO recently completed its second mobilization at a phosphate facility in Louisiana, where crews installed more than 700,000 SF of 60 mil textured HDPE liner for ongoing containment improvements.

The completed scope also included more than 3,500 LF of tie-in welding and anchor trench construction, along with additional support efforts that helped keep the project progressing efficiently.

Where Coordination Meets Production

Keeping work moving required constant coordination between contractors, site personnel, and field crews. As installation areas shifted, crews managed material movement, maintained access routes, and adjusted to changing site conditions while installation continued.

At the same time, crews prepared tie-in areas, maintained subgrade ahead of liner deployment, and relocated materials as new phases of work became available.

Those details matter more than most people realize. Liner installation relies on consistent site conditions. If subgrade conditions deteriorate or work areas become congested, production can slow down quickly.

Tie-in work required especially close attention. Existing liner had to be carefully exposed, cleaned, and prepared before welding operations could begin. Proper tie-ins are critical to maintaining long-term containment performance.

Adjusting to Changing Site Conditions

Like many projects along the Gulf Coast, weather became part of the daily conversation.

High winds posed challenges across portions of the project, requiring crews to constantly evaluate conditions and adjust operations as needed. Rather than forcing production during unsafe conditions, Superintendent Martin Calderon Sr. shifted crews to safer tasks until installation could resume safely.

That kind of decision-making often determines how smoothly a project progresses. Staying productive is important, but protecting crews always comes first.

Thanks to that approach, the project was completed safely without incidents during either mobilization.

Details That Matter Most

The purpose of this containment system is straightforward. It helps prevent phosphate materials from impacting surrounding soils and groundwater.

But achieving that protection takes more than simply placing liner panels across prepared areas. Crews have to maintain consistent subgrade conditions, manage water across the work area, and pay close attention to installation quality throughout every phase of construction. Small issues caught early in the field can prevent much larger problems later on.

Communication between crews also played a major role throughout the project. As new work areas became available, daily coordination helped keep progress moving and prevented unnecessary slowdowns between phases.

Projects like this are a good reminder that large-scale containment work is rarely just about production numbers. A lot of the success comes from how crews handle the smaller details each day in the field.

Experienced Crews Make the Difference

Completing two mobilizations required planning, adaptability, and experienced field leadership from start to finish.

Martin Calderon Sr. and the COMANCO crew kept work progressing safely while adapting to changing conditions across the site. That experience helped maintain installation quality and supported steady progress throughout both mobilizations.

As containment demands continue growing across industrial facilities, experienced field execution remains one of the biggest factors in delivering reliable long-term performance.
