COMANCO Conquers Containment Solutions and Overcomes Water Management Challenges at a Tampa Power Plant

COMANCO has launched a critical pond and ditch system rehabilitation project, incorporating advanced containment solutions such as geosynthetic clay liners and plastic pond liners at a power plant, reinforcing our commitment to environmental protection and regulatory compliance. This project presents unique challenges, but our experienced crew, led by Superintendent Jose Mendez, is demonstrating skill and efficiency in overcoming them.

Revitalizing Water Management

This rehabilitation project focuses on restoring a pond and its associated drainage ditches to improve water management at the facility. Heavy rain can lead to flooding in key areas of the plant, and the updated system will help control water flow while preventing potential contamination. Given the likelihood of coal ash in the soil, proper containment is essential for environmental safety.

The project is in its early stages. The pond has been stripped of vegetation, and crews are now working on clearing the ditches that feed into it. Once excavation is complete, COMANCO will install 75,000 square feet of 80-mil HDPE liner – a durable containment solution often used alongside concrete liners and geosynthetic clay liners -and 33,000 square feet of 220 Geocomposite, both sourced from SKAPS, a trusted provider of geosynthetic solutions.

Navigating Challenges with Expertise

Despite obstacles, the team is making excellent progress. One major challenge was a broken pipe leaking water into the pond as we were dewatering. Even though the source of the leak was not located for weeks, our crew managed to keep operations moving while ensuring safety and efficiency. With zero safety incidents and a well-maintained site, COMANCO continues to uphold its high standards of job site management.

Unique Aspects of the Project

Unlike many large-scale drainage projects, this job rehabilitates multiple small ditches rather than a few large ones. This requires careful coordination and precise execution to ensure long-term functionality. Additionally, performing work within a power plant setting adds another layer of complexity, requiring strict adherence to site-specific regulations and safety protocols.

The Positive Impact

Once completed, the rehabilitated pond and drainage system will significantly enhance water control at the facility. By using advanced containment solutions, including methane barriers and pit liners, to prevent water from seeping into potentially contaminated soil, the system helps mitigate environmental risks while improving site operations.

COMANCO takes pride in delivering solutions that not only meet regulatory standards but also protect the environment and ensure long-term sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates as this project progresses.
