Methane Vapor Barrier System Installation Begins in South Florida
COMANCO Starts Phase 1 of a Methane Vapor Barrier System
Superintendent Jorge Barrantes, Foreman Billy Menard, and a COMANCO crew have begun Phase 1 of a methane vapor barrier system at a premier industrial park in South Florida. The project is designed to safely manage landfill gases beneath a future development while supporting the safe reuse of previously impacted property.
The methane vapor barrier system combines an HDPE vapor barrier with a passive venting SCH80 PVC header network that naturally collects and redirects methane gases away from the building footprint. This approach helps prevent harmful gases from entering occupied structures while maintaining long-term environmental protection.
Methane Vapor Barrier System Components
Phase 1 includes the installation of an extensive vent grid system consisting of:
- 1,660 linear feet of 1-inch SCH80 PVC pipe
- 460 linear feet of 4-inch SCH80 PVC pipe
- 1,760 linear feet of 6-inch SCH80 PVC pipe
Once the venting infrastructure is installed, COMANCO will place approximately 219,725 square feet of 60-mil smooth HDPE geomembrane over the system. The vapor barrier works together with the vent grid to safely control and disperse methane gases generated beneath the site.
Supporting Brownfield Redevelopment
Many redevelopment projects are constructed on or near former construction and demolition (C&D) landfills. These sites often contain buried materials that can generate methane and other gases as they decompose over time.
A properly designed methane vapor barrier system allows these properties to be safely redeveloped for industrial, commercial, and community use. By preventing gas intrusion into buildings, vapor barriers and venting systems help transform previously underutilized land into productive developments.
COMANCO’s Expertise in Gas Mitigation Systems
Over the past several years, COMANCO has worked closely with clients and engineers to develop efficient solutions for Brownfield and landfill gas mitigation projects throughout the United States. Our experience with geosynthetics, containment systems, and specialty piping allows us to deliver cost-effective systems that meet both environmental and construction objectives.
In addition to geomembrane and pipe installation, COMANCO coordinates supporting electrical and mechanical components required for complete gas management systems. This turnkey approach helps reduce project costs, improve scheduling, and streamline communication among project stakeholders.
Building Safer Development Opportunities
The successful implementation of a methane vapor barrier system creates opportunities for redevelopment while protecting future occupants and the surrounding environment. Through quality workmanship, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety, COMANCO continues to help clients unlock the value of previously challenging properties.
