Landfill in Guantanamo Bay Successfully Completed
COMANCO Superintendent Martin Calderon and crew have completed the geosynthetics installation for the first solid waste Landfill in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Geosynthetics Installation for a Critical Infrastructure Project
Under the Department of the Navy (NAVFAC Southeast), COMANCO worked with RQ Construction as an integral part of the team constructing the new Solid Waste Facility inside Guantanamo Bay. This important environmental project will help provide long-term waste management solutions while protecting surrounding natural resources.
The COMANCO crew completed the installation of an 11.5-acre landfill cell utilizing a three-layer geosynthetic system consisting of GCL, 60-mil HDPE textured geomembrane, and a 300-mil double-sided geocomposite. These materials work together to create a highly engineered containment system designed to manage waste safely and effectively.
Additional Leachate Pond Construction
In addition to the landfill cell, the crew completed the installation of two 2-acre leachate ponds and several smaller ponds that will serve as part of the facility’s wastewater treatment system. These components are critical to the overall operation of the Landfill in Guantanamo Bay and help ensure proper collection and management of leachate generated by the facility.
Safety, Quality, and Performance
Despite battling daily high winds, Martin and his crew took advantage of favorable dry-season conditions to maintain production and complete the project safely and ahead of schedule.
The successful completion of this project demonstrates COMANCO’s expertise in geosynthetics installation, environmental construction, and complex landfill development projects. Through teamwork, planning, and a commitment to quality, the crew delivered another successful project while upholding COMANCO’s standards of excellence.
