North Florida Landfill Project Nears Completion
A COMANCO team led by Superintendent Bill Newman is nearing completion of a North Florida Landfill project that will provide additional disposal capacity while maintaining strict environmental protection standards. Through careful planning, quality installation practices, and a strong commitment to safety, the crew continues to make excellent progress toward final certification.
Geosynthetic Liner System Installation
Bill and his crew have just finished placing more than 23,000 cubic yards of protective cover soil over a three-layer geosynthetic liner system. The system consists of a strip of GCL down the center of the cell followed by a 60-mil HDPE geomembrane layer and a double-sided geocomposite layer installed across the new 7-acre landfill cell.
These engineered geosynthetic materials play a critical role in protecting groundwater and surrounding environmental resources by providing containment and drainage capabilities throughout the life of the landfill.
Leachate Collection System Construction
The crew is now focusing on the final stage of the project, which involves installing the leachate collection system (LCS) consisting of 8-inch and 24-inch HDPE pipe wrapped with river gravel and geotextile. The system will run down the center of the new cell and sump area, helping collect and transport leachate safely and efficiently.
Proper leachate management is essential for any modern landfill operation and is a key component of regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship.
North Florida Landfill Ready for Certification
Once completed, this North Florida Landfill project will provide the customer with a new disposal cell ready to accept C&D waste materials while helping protect surrounding soil and water resources. The completed cell will increase site capacity and support long-term operational needs.
