COMANCO Turns Heads with Gyp Stack Closure in Central Florida
COMANCO Turns Heads with Gyp Stack Closure work in Central Florida as crews continue progressing through Phase II of a large-scale phosphate gypsum stack closure project. The project combines environmental protection, advanced geosynthetic installation, and visually appealing design solutions to create a safer and more sustainable site for the future.
Currently, approximately 23% of Phase II has been completed. The project highlights COMANCO’s commitment to quality workmanship, environmental stewardship, and strong field leadership throughout every stage of construction.
Gyp Stack Closure Leadership Driving Progress
Leading this Gyp Stack Closure project is Superintendent Gerardo Ruiz, alongside Foreman Freddy Serano and Leadman Everardo Amador. Together, the team continues maintaining efficient operations while mentoring crew members and reinforcing COMANCO’s culture of safety, training, and professional development.
Their leadership has helped maintain strong productivity while ensuring the project continues meeting strict environmental and quality standards. Through hands-on guidance and teamwork, the crew continues building momentum as the closure system expands across the site.
Specialized Materials for Long-Term Protection
As part of the Gyp Stack Closure installation, the crew has installed more than 456,323 square feet of Agru MicroSpike® 60mil HDPE liner. Unlike traditional black liner systems, this green-colored liner was selected to better blend with the surrounding landscape while still providing the same high-performance environmental protection.
In addition, crews have installed more than 441,438 square feet of Skaps 270-2-10 DS Geocomposite material. These materials work together to prevent water infiltration and help safely contain gypsum byproducts within the stack system.
The installation process requires careful attention to detail, precision welding, and ongoing quality control testing to ensure long-term system performance and environmental compliance.
Environmental Benefits of Gyp Stack Closure Systems
This Gyp Stack Closure project plays a critical role in protecting nearby groundwater and surrounding ecosystems. By preventing clean stormwater from interacting with gypsum materials, the containment system helps reduce the risk of contamination while improving long-term environmental stability.
Closure systems like this are essential components of responsible phosphate operations throughout Florida. They help facilities safely manage legacy materials while restoring and protecting the surrounding environment for future generations.
Versatility and Teamwork Across COMANCO
Leadman Everardo Amador continues demonstrating exceptional versatility on this project. In addition to his field leadership responsibilities, Everardo regularly assists with transportation logistics and supports additional liner projects when needed.
His willingness to adapt and contribute across multiple departments reflects COMANCO’s commitment to teamwork, resourcefulness, and operational excellence.
