COMANCO Installs Pond Liner at Arizona Copper Mine Improving Water Management

Water management is one of the most critical challenges facing modern mining operations. In arid regions, every gallon used in production matters. Mines that fail to manage, contain, and reuse water efficiently face higher operating costs, regulatory risk, and long-term environmental impacts. Lined ponds play a central role in addressing these challenges by allowing operators to capture, recharge, and recycle water safely.

COMANCO recently completed a pond liner installation at a copper mine in Arizona, supporting the site’s efforts to improve water reuse and long-term containment performance.

Why Pond Lining Matters in Mining Operations

Ponds at mine sites are often used to store process water, stormwater, or reclaimed water for reuse in production. Without a properly designed and installed liner system, these ponds can allow water to migrate into the subgrade, increasing the risk of contamination and water loss.

In copper mining, water reuse is especially important. Processing operations require significant volumes of water, and sourcing fresh water can be costly and environmentally challenging. A well-constructed lined pond helps mines recharge and recycle as much water as possible, reducing demand on local water resources while maintaining compliance with environmental regulations.

Supporting Mining Operations

This project involved installing a geosynthetic liner system for a pond at an active copper mine. COMANCO delivered a high-quality liner installation that will support long-term water containment and reuse.

The project reached 100% completion at the end of January. COMANCO focused on installing approximately 10,000 SF of 80 mil HDPE MicroSpike material manufactured by AGRU, selected for its durability and enhanced interface friction in pond applications.

Field Execution in Real-World Conditions

Pond liner installations require careful coordination and attention to detail. Subgrade preparation, panel layout, seaming, and quality control all contribute to the system’s success. Even on smaller-footprint projects, installation mistakes can lead to costly repairs or a shortened liner lifespan.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Martin Calderon, COMANCO’s crew approached this project with a focus on precision and consistency. From layout to final welding, the team followed established installation procedures and quality standards to ensure the liner system met performance expectations.

Working at a copper mine adds another layer of complexity. Active operations, safety requirements, and coordination with other trades must all be managed effectively. COMANCO’s experience working in mining environments allows crews to adapt to these conditions without compromising safety or quality.

Quality Control and Long-Term Performance

The long-term success of a lined pond depends on more than just material selection. Proper seaming, testing, and documentation are essential. HDPE liners must be installed and welded correctly to prevent leaks and maintain containment over time.

COMANCO emphasizes quality control throughout every phase of liner installation. This includes visual inspections, nondestructive testing, and adherence to project specifications. These practices help ensure that the pond liner performs as intended and supports the mine’s operational goals for years to come.

Supporting Water Recharge and Sustainability Goals

One of the project’s positive outcomes is its role in helping the copper mine recharge and recycle water used in production. By capturing and retaining water within a lined system, the operation can reduce water loss, improve efficiency, and lessen its environmental footprint.

In regions like Arizona, where water availability can be a concern, infrastructure that supports reuse is not optional. It is essential. Properly lined ponds are a practical, proven solution that aligns operational needs with environmental responsibility.

Looking Ahead in the Copper Industry

This project highlights COMANCO’s continued involvement in mining water management and geosynthetic installation. Copper mining presents unique challenges, but it also offers opportunities to apply proven containment solutions that protect resources and support responsible production.

As demand for copper continues to grow, so does the need for reliable infrastructure that supports sustainable operations. COMANCO looks forward to expanding its work within the copper industry and continuing to deliver liner systems that perform in real-world mining conditions.

Doing It Right the First Time

Pond liners are not a place to cut corners. When installed correctly, they protect water resources, support compliance, and reduce long-term risk. This Arizona copper mine project demonstrates the value of experienced crews, quality materials, and disciplined execution.

By focusing on safety, quality, and service, COMANCO helps mining operators build containment systems they can rely on from day one through the life of the facility.
