COMANCO Advances Gypstack Expansion With Large-Scale Geosynthetic Liner Installation
Behind every successful phosphate operation is an environmental containment system built to perform for decades.
COMANCO is currently installing a large-scale geosynthetic liner system to expand a gypsum stack (gypstack) at one of Florida’s highest-producing phosphate manufacturing facilities. Once complete, the new containment area will provide the environmental protection needed to safely manage phosphogypsum while helping prevent contaminants from reaching surrounding soil and groundwater.
With work underway, the project highlights the precision, experience, and commitment to quality that COMANCO crews bring to every installation.
Supporting Critical Environmental Infrastructure
High-production phosphate facilities depend on reliable containment systems to operate safely and responsibly. As production grows, expanding containment capacity becomes essential for maintaining environmental compliance and protecting natural resources.
This gypstack expansion is an important investment in long-term infrastructure, ensuring the facility can continue to operate while responsibly managing industrial byproducts.
Building a High-Performance Liner System
COMANCO’s scope of work includes the installation of:
- 66 acres of 60mil SKAPS geomembrane liner
- 16 acres of SKAPS 270mil geocomposite venting strips
- Anchor trench construction to securely terminate the liner system
These components work together to create a durable containment system designed for long-term performance. The geocomposite venting strips help manage gas movement beneath the liner, while the anchor trench secures the geomembrane around the perimeter of the containment area.
The project is currently just over 20% complete, with approximately 15 acres of liner installed as crews continue to progress through the first half of the expansion.
Delivering Quality Despite Challenging Conditions
Environmental construction projects don’t stop when conditions become difficult.
Under the direction of Supervisor Ubaldo Mancilla, the COMANCO crew has continued installing the liner system despite persistent wet conditions across the site. Even with muddy terrain and changing weather, the team has maintained exceptional installation quality while keeping the project moving forward safely and efficiently.
Their ability to adapt without compromising workmanship reflects the experience and professionalism that define COMANCO’s field operations.
Why Gypstack Containment Matters
Gypstacks are engineered containment facilities designed to safely store phosphogypsum, a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production.
Properly installed geomembrane liner systems create a critical environmental barrier that helps contain industrial materials and reduce the risk of contaminants migrating into surrounding soil and groundwater. Combined with engineered venting systems and secure anchor trenches, these containment solutions support both regulatory compliance and long-term environmental stewardship.
Projects like this play an important role in protecting natural resources while supporting one of Florida’s most significant industries.
Built to Protect the Environment
Containment systems are only as reliable as the work behind them. As this gypstack expansion continues, COMANCO remains focused on delivering a high-quality liner installation that supports long-term environmental performance.
From geosynthetic liner systems to complete environmental containment solutions, COMANCO continues helping industrial facilities protect surrounding ecosystems while building infrastructure designed to last.
