COMANCO Environmental has commenced installation of geosynthetics on a 4.5-acre Coal Ash LF expansion in Palatka, FL. This vertical expansion will allow more space for waste as the existing, active landfill continues to grow. The slopes above the existing landfill had to, first, be cleared & grubbed, stripped, balanced out and fine graded to a design grade. The 60-mil HDPE geomembrane being installed now will be tied into the existing geomembrane from the previous cell’s construction.
One of COMANCO’s newest in-house built innovations, the liner winch, has been very instrumental for this particular portion of work & has eliminated a lot of risks as access is very tight & limited on these slopes. Protective cover soil placement and sod will follow in the coming weeks to complete this project.
This is the 2nd phase of construction on this particular project. COMANCO has been working on a 19.5-acre Closure job adjacent to this Expansion for the past several months and is nearing completion there as well. Great site leadership & coordination has been demonstrated by Superintendent, Nathan Wilfong, Foreman, Pedro Beltran and Project Engineer, James Kile. Safety has remained the #1 priority while moving these projects forward with a wide variety of construction activities taking place.
