The Area 5 Closure is approximately a 100-acre lake on top of a 300ft high gypsum stack.
It will be divided into South and North portions by a divider dike and will be able to hold clean rainwater once completed. Outfall pipe will be installed by directional drilling so the water can be released when necessary. Superintendent Justino Macedo is overseeing the project to be completed by middle of 2021. The entire lake will be lined then covered with 2ft of soil and grassed when not in use.
