COMANCO Participates in the SWA 22nd Annual Golf Tournament at Park Ridge Golf Course
This past Saturday, October 17, COMANCO joined the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County for the SWA 22nd Annual Golf Tournament, also the 3rd Annual Patrick Carroll Invitational. Our team played a round at Park Ridge Golf Course in Lake Worth and spent the morning with SWA staff and colleagues from Palm Beach County’s solid waste community.
As a contractor specializing in landfill construction, landfill closure, geosynthetic liner installation, and environmental containment systems, COMANCO values opportunities to connect with the public agencies and industry professionals responsible for planning, permitting, operating, and maintaining solid waste facilities. Events like the SWA Golf Tournament provide valuable opportunities to strengthen relationships with the organizations that help shape the future of waste management infrastructure.
SWA 22nd Annual Golf Tournament
The tournament took place on Saturday, October 17, at Park Ridge Golf Course, located at the corner of Lantana Road and Lyons Road. COMANCO was represented by Thomas Raab, Vice President of Construction; Alex Kusik, Project Engineer; and Martin Alarcon, Leadman.
Our team enjoyed time on the course and caught up with SWA’s Nate Mayer, P.E., Chief Engineer, and Kevin Liang, P.E., Director of Project Management and Facilities Development, who joined us for a group photo outside the clubhouse. Thank you to Eileen Lorenzo and the SWA team for organizing the event and inviting us to participate.
A Golf Course Built on a Closed Landfill
Park Ridge was a fitting location for this event. The course was built on the closed Lantana Landfill through a partnership between Palm Beach County and the Solid Waste Authority, and it opened to the public in March 2007. A blue sign outside the clubhouse describes it as an award-winning landfill restoration project developed through a partnership between the SWA and the PBC Parks and Recreation Department.
A few details stand out:
- The course has received engineering and environmental awards.
- It is certified by Audubon International as a cooperative sanctuary.
- It rises about 85 feet at its highest point, which may be the highest ground in the county.
Seeing a former landfill become a public recreation space is a good reminder of what long-term planning can accomplish. Successful closures depend on sound engineering, quality construction, and careful attention to containment and cover systems long before the first tee time.
The transformation of former landfill properties into beneficial community assets highlights the importance of proper closure design and construction. Throughout its history, COMANCO has supported landfill owners and operators across the United States through liner installation, landfill expansion projects, closure construction, leachate management infrastructure, and long-term containment solutions that help facilities meet operational and environmental goals.
Why Industry Engagement Matters
Landfill and containment projects involve many parties, including owners, regulators, designers, consultants, and contractors. Events like this help those groups build working relationships outside of formal project settings.
For COMANCO, that kind of engagement supports:
- Open conversations about landfill construction, closure, and containment challenges
- Early discussions that improve constructability and project planning
- Stronger partnerships with solid waste authorities, engineers, and facility operators
- Shared knowledge of evolving environmental and regulatory requirements
- Continued involvement in the communities where COMANCO serves customers
Those relationships make it easier to ask questions, raise concerns, and solve problems when a project moves from planning to construction.
Looking Ahead
Thank you to the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County and the tournament organizers for a well-run event. We enjoyed the day and look forward to continuing these conversations and partnerships throughout the year.
Supporting industry events hosted by organizations such as the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County allows COMANCO to remain engaged with customers beyond active construction projects. These opportunities reinforce the partnerships that help successful landfill and containment projects move from planning and design through construction and long-term operation.
