How field experience, peer mentorship, and technical cross-training are building the next generation of certified Liner Technicians
COMANCO’s Employee Training Program Creates a Pathway for Liner Technician Development
At COMANCO, employee development is more than training; it is about creating opportunities for our people to grow, strengthen their skills, and build a career.
Our Employee Training Program (ETP) is an internal development program designed for employees who are interested in taking the next step in their careers and pursuing the opportunity to become a Liner Technician.
The process begins in the field. Employees interested in advancing are evaluated by their Superintendents based on their performance, experience, skill set, and readiness for additional responsibility. Those who meet the established criteria are invited to participate in an intensive, hands-on Liner Technician Focus Week.
This focused training gives employees the opportunity to learn from some of COMANCO’s most experienced mechanics and Liner Technicians while developing the technical skills and confidence needed to succeed in the field.
Learning from the Experts
The week began with Justin “Jay” Grenke, who provided an in-depth look at the wedge welding machine. Employees learned about proper setup and adjustment, cleaning and maintenance, safety, and best practices for working with the equipment.
The training also created an important opportunity for two-way learning. Field employees were able to bring questions and share real-life experiences from their jobsites, while the mechanics provided their technical knowledge and perspective.
That open dialogue helped connect what happens in the field with what happens behind the equipment, creating a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.
After the demonstrations, employees put their knowledge into practice with extensive hands-on training.
Understanding the Equipment from the Inside Out
Leodan “Leo” Gutierrez continued the training with a detailed session on sewing machines.
Employees learned the do’s and don’ts of operating and maintaining the machines, including how to properly take them apart, inspect and clean them, and put them back together.
Understanding the equipment at this level gives employees a better appreciation for proper maintenance and the role it plays in keeping equipment reliable and minimizing downtime in the field.
The team also received hands-on instruction with the extrusion gun, covering proper operation, cleaning, safety, maintenance, and techniques for achieving the best possible results.
Turning Knowledge into Field Experience
One of the highlights of the week was the opportunity to learn from Roberto Zavaleta, whose years of experience as a Liner Technician brought the training together through practical, real-world application.
Roberto worked directly with the employees on welding and extrusion welding techniques, using realistic field scenarios to help them understand how to approach different situations they may encounter on a jobsite.
The team also learned how to create boots for gas, giving employees an opportunity to practice and refine their techniques while receiving immediate feedback.
This hands-on experience allowed the participants to take what they had learned throughout the week and apply it in a practical setting, helping them build both their technical abilities and confidence.
A Team Effort
The success of ETP is made possible by the COMANCO employees who are willing to share their knowledge and experience with the next generation of skilled workers.
From mechanics demonstrating equipment maintenance to experienced Liner Technicians sharing lessons learned from the field, the week was filled with collaboration, questions, practice, and continuous learning.
A special thank you goes to Alberto Ambrocio, who was instrumental in supporting the training throughout the week. Whether responding to last-minute requests or helping make sure the team had what they needed, Alberto played an important role in keeping the training experience running smoothly.
Investing in the Future of COMANCO
ETP reflects COMANCO’s continued commitment to developing our people from within. By providing employees with a clear opportunity to grow, learn from experienced team members, and develop specialized skills, we are helping build a stronger workforce for the future.
The program also reinforces an important part of COMANCO’s culture: we learn from each other. The experience and knowledge of our seasoned employees can help prepare those coming behind them, creating a continuous cycle of learning and development.
Congratulations to our ETP participants on completing an intensive week of Liner Technician training! We are proud of their dedication and look forward to seeing them continue to develop their skills and take the next step in their COMANCO careers.
