COMANCO Elevates Geomembrane Quality Control with Real-Time Weld Documentation

A recent landfill closure project in North Florida demonstrates how innovative technology, experienced field personnel, and precise documentation work together to deliver exceptional geomembrane installation results.
The project included the installation of more than 365,500 square feet of white 60-mil textured HDPE geomembrane, an area spanning more than six football fields laid side by side. While the installation is significant, the project’s greatest achievement is the quality assurance built into one of its most unique features: the ballast trench system.
A Unique Welding Challenge
Unlike traditional geomembrane installations that rely on cover soil and sod, this project incorporates an innovative ballast trench system designed to secure the liner while eliminating the need for those materials.
Installing the ballast trenches required specialized fusion welding equipment capable of producing precise welds in areas demanding exceptional attention to detail. Under the leadership of Superintendent Jorge Gomez, COMANCO’s crew successfully installed and welded 4,622 linear feet of ballast trenches, a distance equal to nearly nine-tenths of a mile or approximately 10 Washington Monuments stacked end-to-end.
Maintaining quality across thousands of linear feet of critical welds required not only skilled craftsmanship, but also a robust quality control process that tracked every step of installation.
Every Weld Accounted For
Behind every successful weld is a rigorous quality control process, and this one was led by QC Technician Hector Yanes.
Using GeoCAAB, a digital quality management platform designed specifically for geosynthetics and environmental construction projects, Hector documented every ballast trench weld as it was completed. Instead of relying solely on paper records or post-construction reporting, GeoCAAB provided real-time documentation and verification throughout the installation process.
This digital workflow delivered immediate visibility into welding progress while creating a detailed record of each weld’s location, testing, and quality verification. The result is enhanced traceability, improved communication among project stakeholders, and increased confidence that every weld meets project specifications.
