COMANCO Revolutionizes Phosphate Gypsum Stack Closure with an Innovative Approach to Stormwater Management

COMANCO continues to make steady progress on a large-scale environmental project at a phosphate plant in Mississippi. Crews are closing a gypstack stack using WatershedGeo’s advanced ClosureTurf® system. Led by Superintendent Carlos Garcia, along with Leadman Amancio Lugo, Project Manager Michael Taylor, Assistant Project Manager David Ramirez, and Project Engineer Jose Martinez, this multi-phase closure project highlights COMANCO’s commitment to safety, innovation, and environmental responsibility.

Delivering Results Across Every Phase

This project includes three major phases. The first is the closure of the gyp stack, which covers approximately 72 acres. The second phase involves the Pond 5 Stormwater Pond, which spans around 47 acres. The third phase addresses the Water Return Ditches, totaling about 48 acres. COMANCO is currently working on the final phase, which involves installing WatershedGeo’s ClosureTurf System in two large Water Return Ditches, WRD South and WRD West.

Pushing Forward with Precision

The team recently completed the liner and turf installation for the WRD South section. This included 1,321,705 square feet of AGRU 50 Mil LLDPE Super Gripnet liner and 1,289,701 square feet of ClosureTurf. The crew has now turned their attention to WRD West. So far, they have installed 32,880 square feet of liner and 31,079 square feet of turf, about five percent of the total area. The next step will be applying a 5/8-inch sand ballast and UV protection layer. This work is scheduled to begin later this month in WRD South. Air Pump USA, working with General Contractor Kemron, will spray the sand. COMANCO will then groom it to meet WatershedGeo specifications.

Leading the Way with Smarter Solutions

The ClosureTurf System combines AGRU’s 50 Mil LLDPE Super Gripnet liner with a synthetic turf layer from WatershedGeo. This integrated system reduces future maintenance costs and environmental impact compared to traditional closure methods, which typically require cover soil and ongoing vegetation maintenance.

Overcoming Weather Challenges

Persistent rain and strong winds have made progress challenging. However, Superintendent Carlos Garcia and his skilled crew have kept the project moving safely and efficiently. Their ability to manage water on-site and adapt to changing conditions shows the value of experience and teamwork.

Sustainable Environmental Impact

Prior to this closure, the phosphate site spent millions each year processing stormwater runoff from the old gypsum stack. The ClosureTurf System significantly reduces this expense by minimizing runoff and protecting the environment. This project not only leads to long-term cost savings but also supports sustainability efforts.

Closing In on Completion

As COMANCO approaches the final stages of this gyp stack closure, the team remains focused on delivering safe, high-quality service and lasting value. Stay tuned for more updates as this innovative project comes to a close.
