COMANCO Attends Annual FPPC Spring Conference

COMANCO recently participated in the Florida Phosphate Political Committee (FPPC) Spring Conference, held in the picturesque setting of Boca Grande, FL. The attendees included Mark & Christine Topp, Dan & Brooke McRae, Thomas & Loreyn Raab, Shujwana & Terry Lamy, and Trevor Topp & Lauren Vergamini, who enjoyed a three-day event at the historic Gasparilla Inn & Club on Gasparilla Island, a location deeply tied to the phosphate industry’s legacy.

Gasparilla Island, known for Port Boca Grande and its groundbreaking 1911 automatic transloader system, played a key role in phosphate shipping for over 50 years. This innovative equipment efficiently transferred phosphate from railcars to ocean freighters, cementing the port’s importance in the industry’s past.

The conference featured engaging keynote speeches from Florida-based experts, focusing on phosphate industry professionals sharing valuable insights. Attendees also enjoyed social activities, including a lively Bingo-filled’ Game Night’ on Thursday and an Ice Cream Social paired with a Friday Casino Night, bringing everyone closer together.

A highlight of the event, as always, was COMANCO’s sponsored Boca Boat Tour along with Hudson Pump and Ring Power. This year, participants cruised along the tranquil Gasparilla Sound, making a memorable stop at Cabbage Key, a charming island known for its unique history and laid-back atmosphere. Cabbage Key, accessible only by boat, is famous for its historic inn and restaurant, built in the 1930s by the family of writer Mary Roberts Rinehart. The island’s quirky tradition of visitors taping signed dollar bills to the restaurant’s walls, now covered with thousands of bills, added a fun and quirky element to the visit. The group enjoyed the island’s lush surroundings and relaxed vibe before continuing their scenic journey.

COMANCO expresses its appreciation to the FPPC Board for organizing this impactful event, which continues to raise awareness about the phosphate industry. The board, made up of dedicated industry leaders, ensures the industry’s voice is heard and its interests are well-represented.
