COMANCO Advances on Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade with Innovative Solutions Despite Constraints

COMANCO is making progress on an Indian Reservation Wastewater Treatment Plant transformation. With 25% of the project complete, our team is diligently enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the facility’s Rapid Infiltration Basins (RIBs).

Advanced Materials for Long-Lasting Results

This project features the installation of two critical geosynthetic materials:

  • Skaps Industries 10 oz. Geotextile Cushion Layer: A durable and versatile material designed to protect underlying geomembranes and enhance long-term performance.
  • Atarfil USA 60-mil Textured Geomembrane: A high-quality liner offering exceptional resistance to punctures and environmental stressors.

With 280,000 square feet of each material planned, lining operations will begin in February. These advanced materials ensure the infrastructure’s durability and optimal performance for years to come.

Precision Execution Amid Tight Constraints

One of the most notable challenges of this project is the confined construction limits. Security fencing surrounds the site, leaving only 20 feet of clearance around the perimeter. Despite these constraints, our team is expertly managing the export and import of materials. By leveraging COMANCO’s specialized equipment and subcontracted hauling services, we keep the project on schedule while maintaining safety and quality.

Maintaining Operations During Construction

A unique aspect of this project is the phased approach to relining the RIBs. The plant relies on these basins for wastewater infiltration. Two of the five RIBs must remain operational to ensure continued functionality while the other three are rehabilitated. Once the first three basins are complete, they will return online, allowing work to begin on the remaining two. This strategic approach minimizes disruptions and keeps the plant fully functional throughout construction.

Positive Impact on Efficiency and Sustainability

The existing RIBs were no longer operating efficiently due to damage to the inter-RIB berms and perimeter berm liners. The basin bottoms also required cleaning and replacement to restore functionality. COMANCO’s comprehensive relining and rehabilitation process will:

  • Maximize water infiltration rates.
  • Strengthen the structural integrity of the berms.
  • Enhance overall operational efficiency for the Indian Reservation Water Treatment Plant.

By resolving these issues, this project ensures the facility is equipped to meet future demands with sustainable and high-performing infrastructure.
