Safety Act Demonstrates COMANCO’s Commitment to Employee Well-Being
Safety Act Recognized on Southwest Florida Landfill Project
The COMANCO Safety Department would like to recognize Superintendent Jorge Gomez Ruiz, Gerardo Ruiz, and Foreman Pablo Medina for an outstanding Safety Act performed while working on a landfill construction project in Southwest Florida.
This Safety Act demonstrated exceptional leadership and concern for employee well-being by proactively addressing the challenges associated with working in Florida’s extreme summer temperatures.
How This Safety Act Protected the Crew
Recognizing the impact that heat can have on worker health and productivity, the team took the initiative to provide additional protection for crew members by setting up a shaded canopy area where employees could take micro-breaks throughout the day.
In addition, the crew supplied coolers stocked with water and sports drinks to help maintain hydration levels during periods of prolonged outdoor work.
This Safety Act helped create a safer working environment while reinforcing COMANCO’s commitment to protecting employees from heat-related hazards.
Why Heat Safety Matters
Working outdoors in Florida’s climate presents unique challenges. Prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight can contribute to:
- Heat exhaustion
- Heat stroke
- Fatigue
- Decreased alertness
- Dizziness
- Reduced concentration
- Slippery conditions caused by perspiration
Heat-related stress can also affect decision-making and increase the likelihood of workplace incidents if proper precautions are not taken.
By recognizing these risks and implementing preventive measures, employees can significantly reduce the dangers associated with high-temperature working conditions.
Safety Act Examples Improve Workplace Culture
Simple actions often have a significant impact. This Safety Act serves as a great example of how employees can take ownership of workplace safety and look out for the well-being of their coworkers.
At COMANCO, safety is everyone’s responsibility. Team members are encouraged to identify opportunities for improvement and take proactive steps to eliminate hazards whenever possible.
Practical Ways to Prevent Heat Stress
To help protect workers during periods of extreme heat, COMANCO recommends:
- Providing shaded rest areas
- Ensuring drinking water is readily available
- Encouraging regular hydration
- Wearing appropriate sun-protective gear
- Monitoring employees for signs of heat-related illness
- Following established heat stress safety procedures
These simple practices can make a significant difference in maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
Recognizing Outstanding Safety Leadership
COMANCO commends Jorge Gomez Ruiz, Gerardo Ruiz, and Pablo Medina for demonstrating outstanding leadership through this Safety Act. Their commitment to protecting their crew reflects the values that define COMANCO’s Safety culture.
