Florida Stormwater Work Begins in Central Florida

COMANCO crews recently began Florida Stormwater Work on a major stormwater improvement project located in Central Florida. Led by Superintendent Tony Sanchez, the crew has already started making substantial improvements to an existing stormwater ditch and ash sedimentation pond designed to improve environmental protection and long-term erosion control.

This Florida Stormwater Work project focuses on strengthening stormwater management systems while protecting surrounding groundwater from potential contamination caused by ash runoff and surface water infiltration.

Geosynthetics Play a Major Role in Stormwater Protection

As part of the Florida Stormwater Work project, crews are installing Gundseal®, a geomembrane-supported geosynthetic clay liner system that helps prevent seepage and protects groundwater from contaminants. In addition to Gundseal®, crews are also deploying a durable 50-mil HDPE geomembrane liner throughout key portions of the project area.

Geosynthetics are widely used in environmental construction because of their impermeability, durability, and ability to provide long-term environmental protection in stormwater systems, containment ponds, and erosion control applications.

HydroTurf® System Provides Long-Term Erosion Control

Another important feature of this Florida Stormwater Work project is installation of the HydroTurf® system throughout the stormwater ditch areas. Once installed, the HydroTurf® will be topped with HydroBinder®, a cementitious fill material that creates a high-strength concrete matrix for superior erosion protection.

This advanced system offers multiple benefits, including:

  • Reduced long-term maintenance
  • Improved stormwater flow control
  • Enhanced erosion resistance
  • Increased durability during severe weather events
  • Better environmental protection for nearby waterways

The completed ditch system will help the client maintain reliable stormwater infrastructure while reducing future repair costs and environmental risks.

Supporting Environmental Sustainability in Florida

Projects like this Florida Stormwater Work improvement effort play a critical role in protecting Florida’s environment and water systems. Proper stormwater management helps:

  • Reduce localized flooding
  • Prevent groundwater contamination
  • Improve stream and river health
  • Control erosion and sediment runoff
  • Support safer and more sustainable communities

As environmental regulations continue evolving, geosynthetic containment and stormwater systems remain an essential part of modern infrastructure projects across Florida and throughout the United States.
