Coal Ash Landfill Stormwater Project Reaches Key Milestones
COMANCO continues making significant progress on multiple phases of a Coal Ash Landfill stormwater improvement project in Palatka, Florida. Through careful planning, communication, and teamwork, multiple crews are working together to safely complete critical infrastructure improvements that will support long-term environmental protection and stormwater management.
Stormwater Improvements Continue at the Palatka Site
The 6-inch concrete slab over the 1-acre EPF basin has been completed, and the three centrifugal pumps serving the basin’s pump station have been successfully installed. These important milestones help move the project closer to full operational readiness.
At the 5-acre stormwater pond, crews have completed fine grading activities and installed an NW 24-ounce geotextile layer along with a 60-mil HDPE liner. Installation of the geocomposite drainage layer is also nearing completion, allowing the project to transition into the next phase of construction. These improvements are critical to the long-term performance and environmental protection goals of the coal ash facility.
Additional work includes the placement of a two-foot protective soil cover over completed liner systems. Crews are also preparing to begin installation of the 10-inch HDPE toe drain system that will support stormwater collection and drainage throughout the site.
Supporting Long-Term Coal Ash Landfill Performance
Proper stormwater controls are an essential component of every Coal Ash Landfill project and help support regulatory compliance and site sustainability.
More than 1,000 linear feet of 24-inch HDPE outlet pipe from the southwest pond has already been installed, representing another major achievement for the project team. Effective stormwater management plays a critical role by helping control runoff, reducing erosion, and protecting surrounding environmental resources.
