Gypsum Stack Construction Project Progress Continues in Central Florida
COMANCO crews continue making strong progress on a major Gypsum Stack Construction Project in Central Florida. The project involves preparing and reinforcing more than 40 acres that will serve as a newly reactivated gypsum slurry placement area. Through careful coordination between multiple crews, COMANCO remains focused on maintaining production schedules while upholding the company’s commitment to Safety, Quality, and Service.
The Gypsum Stack Construction Project includes extensive earthwork, stabilization drain installation, erosion control measures, and reinforced geosynthetic systems designed to support long-term operational performance.
Earthwork Operations Advance Across the Site
The earthwork crew, led by Superintendents Jeremy Giles and Scott Hall, continues hauling the remaining 40,000 cubic yards of gypsum fill needed to complete starter dikes and cover recently installed high-strength geotextile reinforcement materials.
These reinforcement berm systems are essential components of the Gypsum Stack Construction Project because they help improve stability and support ongoing slurry placement operations. Proper grading and compaction also help improve drainage performance while minimizing erosion risks throughout the site.
Despite changing weather conditions and demanding site logistics, crews continue progressing safely and efficiently across the active work areas.
Drainage and HDPE Installation Support Stack Stability
At the same time, COMANCO’s drainage crew, led by Superintendent Larry Graham, is actively welding and installing 6-inch HDPE piping systems throughout the project. The stabilization drains and outlets are designed to manage water movement and improve long-term stack performance.
These systems include:
- 6-inch HDPE pipe
- #67 silica gravel
- Coarse and fine sand
- 12-ounce geotextile wrap systems
The drainage components are carefully installed using burrito-wrap geotextile techniques to help protect the piping system while supporting filtration and stabilization requirements.
Additional Erosion Control Measures Underway
As portions of the Gypsum Stack Construction Project near completion, additional crews will begin installing Fabriform and articulating block mat (ABM) systems around outlet structures, grade breaks, and outfall areas.
These erosion control systems help reduce washouts and provide long-term surface protection in high-flow drainage areas commonly found on gypsum stack facilities.
COMANCO’s safety department continues playing an important role by ensuring updated Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), proper PPE requirements, and safe work planning for every phase of the project.
COMANCO Maintains Focus on Safety and Quality
Complex environmental construction projects require constant communication, planning, and teamwork. COMANCO remains committed to maintaining high construction standards while prioritizing employee safety throughout every stage of the project.
